Malatya and its surroundings carry most of Türkiye’s apricot processing. At dried-apricot and kernel facilities, once the fruit and kernel meat are separated, the hard shell left behind forms a flow that isn’t small in volume. This shell is dense and durable because it wraps the outside of the kernel — and it’s exactly that hardness that makes it valuable to industry.

Though the flow is seasonal, the region’s processing volume is large enough to give a stable source through the season. The shell is supplied whole, cracked or ground/granulated depending on the job.

For a long time this shell was a waste line at processing plants; separating it often didn’t cover the cost. Once demand grew on the activated-carbon, blasting and biofuel side, the outlook changed. The same raw material is now a separate revenue line and part of a planned supply chain. That also changed how it’s collected: the shell is now routed to different lines right after separating from the fruit, according to where it’s headed.

Which Job Wants Which Quality

The shell’s value comes from not being locked into one job. The same raw material serves very different sectors once it passes through different steps; each sector looks at a different quality criterion.

On the blasting-abrasive side, the job runs on grain hardness and calibre consistency. In metal surface cleaning, paint stripping and deburring, shell granule is less aggressive than mineral abrasives; it’s preferred where cleaning is wanted without deforming the surface. The calibre range varies by job — once the requested mesh is clear, a batch is matched accordingly.

On activated-carbon feedstock, the priority shifts: what matters most here is density, homogeneity and purity. A producer doesn’t want mixed shell or foreign matter, because both lower furnace efficiency. On the fuel side, the job comes down to energy value and moisture consistency; the shell’s dense structure is an advantage here. Cosmetics Side: A Short Note

Finely ground into a homogeneous granule, the shell is also used in cosmetic peeling products — an interesting feedstock for formulators looking for a natural alternative to plastic microbeads. Setting Up Supply Without Depending on the Season

The most common question with an agricultural by-product is: “Can I find it outside the season too?” Even though apricot processing concentrates in a certain period, Malatya’s processing volume and storage capacity turn the shell into a year-round available item. That’s a solid basis for a regular tonnage plan domestically and a container schedule for export.

Calibre and cleanliness aren’t a fixed standard — they’re set to the job. Since what an activated-carbon producer wants isn’t the same as what a blasting or fuel buyer wants, we need to clarify your intended use and target calibre before the order. It wouldn’t be right to promise the shell’s hardness or moisture with a number; for a serious request a sample can be arranged, and if formal documentation is required we run an independent laboratory analysis together on request — especially in export, this makes it easier for the buyer to confirm compliance with their own market’s standard.

Not depending on a single source also strengthens continuity.
