Walnut Shell Export: Grain Size and Packaging Order Checklist

Choosing grain size and packaging for walnut shell export by end use, container loading, delivery terms and what to clarify before ordering.

Walnut Shell Export: Grain Size and Packaging Order Checklist

Export buyers coming for walnut shell usually already know their intended use — blasting, filtration, biomass fuel, landscaping, cosmetics or bedding. What we settle on our side is different: which grain size and which packaging fits that use, how it loads into a container, and what information is needed when ordering. This piece gathers that practical side.

Walnut Shell: Briefly, What It Is

Walnut Shell has a hard organic structure that, unlike mineral abrasives such as sand or glass bead, doesn’t scratch the underlying surface. In cracked form it’s used in blasting and filtration; in ground granule form it’s used in cosmetic peeling. Grain size and form vary with the target use.

Intended Use Sets the Grain Size

Each of the six main use areas calls for a different grain size and dust tolerance:

  • Industrial blasting: Cracked, within a defined grain-size range; grain is chosen based on the hardness of the surface being cleaned.
  • Water and oil filtration: Homogeneous grain size and low dust content; the mesh range varies with the system’s flow rate.
  • Biomass fuel: Cracked shell or pellets made from crushed shell; form depends on boiler type.
  • Decorative landscape mulch: Coarse cracked pieces, low dust content.
  • Cosmetic peeling: Finely ground granule; dust content and cleanliness standard are held to a stricter level than industrial use — we covered this area separately in Shell Granule for Blasting/Cosmetics.
  • Feed and bedding filler: Cracked or ground, free of foreign matter.

Rather than a fixed “standard product” spec, we prepare a sample at the relevant grain size once we know the buyer’s intended use.

Packaging and Container Loading

Two methods are common for in-container loading: roughly one-ton big-bag bags and bulk loading; sacks can also come into play on small or mixed orders. Bulk loading is common with cracked, coarse-grain shell; with finely ground granule (particularly at cosmetic and blasting grain sizes) the preference generally shifts to big-bag because of scattering and dust. Container type (20ft standard / 40ft HQ) varies with the density of the form and the destination country’s transport rules; we explained this general logic through a container example in Hazelnut Shell Export from Turkey.

Delivery Terms, Sample and Paperwork

Quotes are prepared under FOB or CIF; which fits the buyer better is explained in What Are FOB and CIF in Export. For grain-sensitive uses like cosmetics or filtration, sample evaluation matters especially; how the sample, proforma invoice and required paperwork proceed is explained step by step in Sample, Proforma Invoice and Letter of Credit in Export.

What to State When Placing an Order

The following information speeds things up on a quote request:

  • Intended use (blasting, filtration, fuel, landscaping, cosmetics, bedding)
  • Desired grain size or size range (if known)
  • Target port and delivery term preference (FOB or CIF)
  • Packaging preference (big-bag, bulk or sacks) and approximate quantity

Frequently Asked Questions

What grain size of walnut shell do you export? It depends on the use area; we work at different grain sizes and dust tolerances for blasting, filtration, fuel, landscaping, cosmetics and bedding.

Is there a separate process for cosmetic-grade granule? Yes; for buyers requesting cosmetic raw material, dust content and cleanliness standards run on a stricter line.

How do we settle the sample and container plan? We first learn your use area and grain-size expectation; then we prepare a sample and settle packaging and container type together.

Just send your use area, grain-size expectation and target port through the contact page; let’s settle the sample and quote process together.
